WLW: Those Darn Portions

Portion control. It is the easiest and hardest way to lose weight. Most people eat multiple servings in one sitting and don’t even realize it. So when you start actually measuring out portions, you start losing weight just because you’re eating one serving of whatever, instead of two or three. A few years back, I decided to take a few weeks and measure everything. So I actually remember what a serving of cereal looks like (though I refuse to only add a 1/2 cup milk, so I suppose it’s good I switched to skim). I remember what a serving of meat looks like. A serving of vegetables. But when it’s Memorial Day and you’re at a barbecue and there’s so much food and it all looks delicious, it’s so hard to stick to serving sizes. Not to mention, when there are 20 different dishes to pick from, if you get a serving of each, you’re still getting way too much food.

So I have no idea how I did on Memorial Day. I attempted to stick with the better things, rather than pigging out on meat or desserts. Even when we went out for ice cream with my father-in-law last night, I attempted to get a smaller portion, and then I shared that with Nathan. But it’s something that I have to constantly be aware of. Because the portions at pretty much anywhere are out of control. No one is going to make sure my portions are right except me.

I didn’t get out the Wii Fit to weigh myself. I suppose since that’s not my workout method of choice, I should probably break down and buy a scale, so I can be consistent about this. I didn’t walk on Monday because of the holiday, but I did spend two hours working up a sweat cleaning my daughter’s room yesterday. And I’m sore today because of it. So I think that counts as exercise.

Chest = 45″

Waist = 44.5″  43″  I thought my pants were fitting a little better!

Hips = 50″  50.5″  This is probably due to the inaccuracy of my measuring technique prior to buying a new measuring tape.

Thighs = 26″  27″ and 27″  Again, probably due to the inaccuracies of my measuring technique.

Biceps = 14″ and 15″  13.5″ and 14″  This could be due to the inaccuracies of my measuring, but I’ve also been doing a lot of baby benchpressing with Nathan. And I’ve been pushing the monster stroller when I go walking. So I think this is actual loss.

So I don’t know if I’ve lost actual weight, but that inch around the waist is awesome to me. Especially since my waist is the part I notice the most.
